Doorkeepers were in charge of receiving guests of the President and sending word of their arrival. The position was also considered a part of the President's security detail, with two doorkeepers working opposite shifts day and night during the early nineteenth century. Former Doorkeepers include one-time White House Chief Usher Thomas E. Stone and Edward McManus, Doorkeeper during the presidency of Abraham Lincoln.
